It is no secret that students who play collegiate sports are considered, in most cases, the cream of the crop when it comes to high school athletes. Whether you’re a small business or a large corporation, having an athlete student can be extremely beneficial to your company. Not only do they have the ability to reach out to new customers and promote your company, but they can help build morale within your organization. Athlete campus ambassadors can help you reach out to new customers and promote your products or services.

They often have a large following on social media and can generate a lot of word-of-mouth traffic for your business. This type of marketing through student-athletes can benefit companies willing to sponsor said players, given they’re exposed to potentially thousands of people interested in seeing them perform.

Athlete alumni are a powerful resource for both companies and entrepreneurs. They can be used to promote brands, products, services, etc., in an authentic voice that resonates with their university’s fan base.

Here are some of the basics, along with three solid examples.

What exactly is an Athlete Campus Ambassador?

An Athletes campus is who have completed their NCAA eligibility are able to take advantage of the “Campus Speaker” student-athlete opportunity. This allows them to accept speaking engagements without jeopardizing their amateur status. These campus athletes are unique because they are often well-known student-athletes- which means they can command high speaking fees for appearances at your next event or function.

While the network of alumni who fall under this category is fairly extensive, here are a few notable names you’ll recognize: Devin Hester (NFL), Jon Diebler (NBA), Denard Robinson (NFL), Draymond Green (NBA), Michael Dyer (NFL), Donovan Warren (NFL), Cael Sanderson (Olympic Wrestling) and many more.

How can a Campus Speaker benefit your company/event?

As alumni of colleges, they inherently understand the culture, traditions, and fan base. They are familiar with the environment typically created at college sports events, which means they’ll be able to connect on an authentic level and ensure that their message resonates with those in attendance. Athletes make excellent public speakers because of their experience traveling across the country playing games; this will enable them to adjust quickly to any geography or climate conditions.

Most importantly: they know how it feels to win and lose as a member of a team. They understand the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship; they’ll be able to instill those same principles into your staff/at your event.

What’s the total cost of a Campus Speaker?”

Costs vary depending on:

(1) availability

(2) type of engagement.

(3) location/distance away from where you’re hosting your function.

A Campus Speaker with an extensive network will obviously command a higher price tag than someone who may not have as many contacts around the country. One great example is former Ohio State linebacker Bobby Carpenter – who has quite the resume: athlete speaker, sports analyst for Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, and host of “The Bobby Carpenter Show” on ESPN Radio Dallas. Recently he spoke at a fundraiser for his former high school – even though he lives in Dallas, Texas. His fee for this type of engagement was $11,500 plus travel/lodging expenses.

Special rules/guidelines you need to know before hiring an Athlete Campus Ambassador

When it comes to hiring a Campus Speaker, you’ll want to make sure they’re familiar with the material that they will be presenting on – if your event is about fundraising or leadership, then it wouldn’t make sense for someone who has never led a team to serve as your main speaker. You may not have control over what happens on their end between the time they are confirmed through the booking process and the day of your function – but it’s important to provide them with as much information ahead of time as possible, including your event will entail. Be sure to provide them with a media kit/material that they can use to promote the appearance.

Importance of NIL Contract

There are a lot of steps to take when you’re hiring an athlete for your team. The NCAA oversees organizing and regulating college athletics at the national level. For this reason, they require that companies working with student-athletes have a proper NIL contract to avoid any conflicts or violations. The NCAA requires that a National Letter of Intent (NIL) be executed between prospective athletes and school before enrolling in classes. For the NIL contract to be valid, both parties must sign off on all points without any changes or additions made by either party. A well-written NIL ensures that schools are not liable if an athlete decides to go pro early or chooses another institution after signing with them initially.

Examples of engagements by Campus Speakers

Campus speakers make memorable guest speakers at all types of events, including sports-related appearances.

The University of Virginia recently brought in Baltimore Ravens receiver Torrey Smith to speak at a student event about leadership and academics – even though he wasn’t scheduled to play on the competing team during that weekend’s football game. This was a last-minute booking, but his fee for this type of engagement is usually around $8,500 plus travel/lodging expenses. According to their press release: “He’ll share his insights into how collegiate life can be more successful with the right attitude and commitment.

Former NFL stars Eddie George and Tony Dors headlined a recent fundraiser at Centre College in Kentucky – campus speakers for this type of engagement typically charge in the $6,000 to $10,000 range. The main thing to consider is if the Campus Speaker you hire has a certain area of expertise and/or significant experience in your field. There’s also an additional cost for appearance logistics (i.e., travel, lodging), including a small production crew.
